How often to get a manicure so as not to spoil your nails is important for every fashionista to know. Regardless of what procedure was used for treatment, nails and cuticles grow over time, and the hands look unkempt. But this time may be different for each woman.
Some people are able to walk around with perfect nails for a month, while others’ cuticles grow back by the end of the first week after visiting the salon. But each procedure has a certain regularity, because you need to let your nails rest and recover after treatment. In this article we will tell you how often to get a manicure and what tricks will help you postpone your next visit to the nail specialist.
Is rest important for nails?
Experts tend to believe that there is no need to rest your nails from gel polish . To keep your nails healthy, it is important to follow simple rules.
Before reapplying the gel, you need to check the condition of your nail plates. An experienced master carefully removes the coating so as not to thin the nails.
If they are affected, you should take a break for a few days. During this time, it is important to treat the superficial part.

For this purpose, it is best to use natural oils: almond, coconut, jojoba . They allow you to maximally saturate it with vitamins and moisturize it well.
Basic myths associated with gel polish
There is a myth that you need to take breaks and remove the gel coating from time to time. However, in fact, at least with gel polish you can do it all the time. You can damage your nails if you don't care for them correctly. Nutrition will help bring them and the cuticle into ideal condition. It is important to regularly use special moisturizers containing natural oils: for example, almond, jojoba. Almond oil helps retain moisture in the nail plate so that it does not break, and jojoba nourishes the root of the nail, which determines its condition. Gel polish is not dangerous for healthy nails. It can harm them if they peel off and do not accept such a coating.
Another myth is that wearing gel polish for a long time harms your natural nail. However, this is not the case, since there are gel polishes that do not contain formaldehyde and toluene, which means they are harmless to the nail.
It is also worth remembering another common myth: due to wearing gel polish for a long time, natural nails become brittle and peel. In fact, they peel off due to improper removal of the coating. Some girls don’t want to waste time on this, but simply file off the varnish with nail files, rip it off with scissors or sharp sticks.
Is gel nail polish harmful?
Gel polish allows you not to think about updating the beautiful surface of your nails for a long time. But there is also a negative effect when using it:
- The chemical ingredients included in the drug are able to penetrate deeply into the nail plate. If the coating is worn for a long time, aggressive reagents must be used to remove it.
- The use of acetone-containing preparations to remove the skin dries out the nail plate.
- A low-quality composition of a cheap gel polish can cause an allergic reaction.
- Damage can be caused by incorrect application technology.
- Experts recommend correction every 10-14 days. If you neglect this frequency, the gel coating begins to compress the growing stratum corneum. The structure of the nail plate cannot be seen with the naked eye, but you should know that it has about 125 layers. At the moment of regrowth, the gel polish begins to pull them back, causing delamination.
To ensure that your hands are always beautiful and healthy, you should trust the gel polish application procedure only to a trusted professional.
The main causes of poor nail condition
Nails may not be completely healthy for many reasons. An experienced master will always suggest the best method of caring for your hands.

To keep your nails always in order, you need to monitor the process of removing the previous coating.
To remove it, you cannot use harsh means, cut it down, or use a device with attachments. When they are used, there is a gradual depletion of the nail plate and the formation of microcracks and delamination.
Do not apply permanent coating if you have any fungal disease or allergic reaction until it is cured. Otherwise, there is a possibility that the gel polish will not adhere well and the disease will progress.
Our nails grow continuously. A space is formed between them and the gel, on which the coating does not adhere so tightly. It happens that water or dirt particles get under the overgrown cuticle. Pathogenic microorganisms also easily penetrate these places and cause inflammation.

In addition, during cleaning we use chemicals that negatively affect our hands if we work without protective gloves. They cannot harm the gel, but they can contribute to nail breaking.
The manicurist recommends: gel polish, whether to take a break, in detail
Now many girls prefer long-term coverage: it’s beautiful, comfortable and you can forget about manicure for a whole month.
But isn’t it harmful to constantly wear it on your nails? Maybe take a break “for the summer” so that your nails can rest?
Is it necessary to take such a break? And how to wear gel polish so that there are no problems? We addressed these questions to the manicurist E.MI salon

“If a client has started wearing long-term coverage, then I recommend not removing it, but constantly and on time for correction,” says Alina.
Under the artificial coating, the nail is “armored”, so all external influences fall on this protection. If you follow all the recommendations, you can walk around with gel polish on your hands for years.
A big misconception among clients: “I’ll take off my nails for the summer and let them rest.”
On the contrary, it is better not to remove the coating during the holidays in order to protect your nails from exposure to ultraviolet radiation and salt water.
Otherwise, you will return to the quality of your nails that was before the coating: if they peel, it means they will continue to peel. If they were thin, they will remain so after removal. This comes as a big surprise to clients, because under the coating the nails seem thick and strong.
Nails after gel polish
But in order to wear a long-term coating constantly, you need to know all the intricacies and, if possible, protect yourself from problems. Which ones?
“Problems can arise both from the master and from the client,” Alina continues.
Let's talk about everything in order. And let's start with problems on the part of the master.
First problem
- sterility of the instrument. Nowadays manicures and coatings are made deep so that they last a long time and look presentable. Therefore, it is important that the master opens the package with the tool in front of you - you don’t want our nails to be treated with the same device as nails with fungus or other sores.
A good master cannot neglect the sterility of the instrument
Second problem
– these are materials. Not all varnishes used in the work of craftsmen are of high quality. What can you save on? Of course, based on the material, because there are so many Chinese gel polishes on sale! The main issue with “China” is their high acidity. What it is? This is the level of acid that is added to the base itself. At the same time, this coating wears perfectly, and all because it literally “eats” into the nail plate and is absorbed into it.
Gel polish literally eats into the nail, so it can leave such marks
However, wearing it this way can have serious consequences. One of them is a chemical burn. After it, the nail plate begins to weaken, white spots appear (as with iron deficiency). This can still be corrected: remove the long-term coating, and apply impregnating varnish coatings (medicinal varnishes) every day - layer upon layer, without washing off the previous ones.
After 14 days of such rehabilitation, you can apply the product once every two days. This way, you will allow the nail to grow, strengthen and heal.
A consequence of a chemical burn can also be separation of the nail plate from the nail bed. The body has a reaction to any of our actions: if the master used acidic materials, the body understands that they are trying to poison it and tries with all its might to get rid of the nail. Therefore, if you see a “pocket” on the nail, then it is urgent to remove the coating and begin treatment.
Onycholysis - separation of the nail plate from the nail bed
Third problem
– this is the choice of materials for the client. Not many people know that gel polishes are absorbent, and therefore are not welcome on a dry and flaking nail plate: they dry out the nail even more. For such nails, gel coating is more suitable, because gels are hydrophobic and do not dry out the nail.
And finally, the fourth problem
– this is a sawed-off nail, which makes the coating wear very poorly. And another injury to the nail root. If a client has a longitudinal crack in the nail plate, this can no longer be treated. How to protect yourself? If the hole area at the base of the nail is very large (occupies 1/3 of the nail area), then you should not allow the master to do a deep manicure so that the nail does not grow deformed.
Now let's talk about problems from clients.
First of all, in case of detachment
or as soon as you need not to postpone the correction, but immediately go to the specialist. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and even mold may appear in places of detachment.
Next - post-maturity
. On average, gel polish should be worn for 3-4 weeks. And even if the material wears well, do not forget: this is a chemical material, and it tends to become outdated. In case of overuse, there may be chips, cracks, and absorption of chemicals into the nail.
Overgrown gel polish is already too much
Next point: removal
. The liquid contains acetone: the drug dries out the nails and skin of the hands, and can cause a chemical burn. And the device can damage both your hands and the nail plate: after all, the coating must be removed not to the base, but to the base.
If clients begin to remove gel polish on their own, without taking into account all the nuances, consider that half of the nail plate is also removed along with it. If it was not possible to avoid such aggressive removal, it is still recommended to contact a specialist and cover the nail with a base layer or a treatment preparation.
You can very unsuccessfully remove gel polish and then spend a long time restoring the nail plate
Consider these points, and your nails will delight you for a long time!

Is failure to comply with application technology really that dangerous?
An experienced manicurist always strictly follows the technology of working with gel coating. For this reason, there is no point in worrying about the harmfulness of gel polish for your nails. But in the case when the technique is performed incorrectly, the nail plate may break off and peel.
Do not remove the gel coating yourself using solvents at home or tear it off in small pieces. Thus, it is very easy to destroy the structure of the nails, which will lead to their curvature and prolonged treatment.
During the procedure, some masters mistakenly file down the nail plate in the hope that this will hold the gel coating more tightly. The human nail contains an element called keratin. The fact is that the substances contained in the gel, reacting with the varnish, form a very strong adhesion with it. Therefore, there is no need to influence the structure of the nail plate in the form of filing or grinding.
