There are two directions:
- Conveyor or factory processing. The factory one is of lower quality and often the sharpness is lost after the first 10-15 uses. Even if the blades are initially very sharp, they dull much faster compared to manual processing. Also, the blades may have different sharpness along the length, which is why forceps or scissors tear the cuticle and leave burrs.
- Manual sharpening. Sharpening by hand requires experience, knowledge and skill. It is better to contact a professional in the workshop to get the desired result. Many craftsmen try to sharpen scissors and pliers at home using improvised means. Yes, perhaps the sharpness will be enough for a couple more procedures, but after that it is still lost, and the service technician has to do more work to eliminate the consequences of home sharpening.
At home, you can sharpen nail scissors in the following way:
- Needle or awl. A needle or steel rod is inserted between the blades and cutting is simulated. This helps to level the surface of the edges and get rid of burrs. The force is formed so that the pressure begins at the hinges, gradually move the needle so that the “cutting” ends at the very end of the scissors.
- Sandpaper. Its grain size should be fine. Using scissors, the paper is cut into small strips. After this action, the blades become sharp. Preference is given to paper material, since sandpaper on a woven base contains a lot of glue.
- Glass jar. The jar is placed between the open blades, so that it is as close to the center as possible. Start making cutting movements so that the blades slide along the can and it moves towards the end of the scissors. That is, there is an imitation of cutting paper. The process of cutting the can continues until the blades of the scissors become sharpened. It’s better to take an old jar, as it will leave scratches. After this, the blades of the scissors are wiped with paper napkins.
- Aluminum foil. Take a sheet of foil about 25 cm wide and fold it into a long strip in several layers. Start cutting it into several strips, again lengthwise. This will sharpen the scissors and become sharper.
- Using a whetstone. Most often, such a block has two sides with a fine-grained and rough surface. If your tool is too dull, first use a rough surface of a whetstone for sharpening, and only then sharpen the product on a fine-grained surface.
- Prepare the whetstone - place it on a cloth and cover it with water or oil.
- Disassemble the tool - use a screwdriver to unscrew the screw that holds the two halves of the tool. This is done to make sharpening more convenient.
- Sharpen the inside of the blade - to do this, place the sharp side on the whetstone and pass it without tearing off the surface of the scissors along the stone. It will take several such movements until the tool blades become sharp. The same is done with the second half.
- To check whether the tool has become sharp, you need to assemble it and cut the paper or fabric. If you are not satisfied with the result, you need to repeat the steps with the touchstone.
How to sharpen scissors
It is best to entrust scissors to specialists who can professionally sharpen them. But if you are not looking for easy ways, then choose one of the options below:
- Use sandpaper. Cutting such paper will have a positive effect on the instrument.
- Use aluminum foil. Before use, it must be bent several times and cut until the desired result appears.
- Buy a special whetstone - a whetstone.
- Practice glass or metal as the cutting material.
Are nail scissors allowed on a plane?

- Do not drop the scissors or keep them in high humidity - this may cause rust.
- Lubricate the screw regularly with sterile oil.
- When transporting instruments, use special cases and silicone caps to protect the tips.
Careful handling of the tool can significantly increase its service life.
For a high-quality manicure, scissors must be perfectly sharpened - this is the task of professional sharpeners. They can not only restore the sharpness and thinness of the blades, but also restore damage to the edge of the blade. You can determine the need for sharpening by the appearance of characteristic small spots on the cutting surface: the larger the spots, the more worn out the tool is. The highest quality and gentlest tool for tools is the mechanical (manual) sharpening method using a diamond wheel. There is another option - laser sharpening, it is more convenient and easier for the master, but the cutting blade wears out much faster.
