What is volumetric modeling and who is it suitable for?
So, nail sculpting is the creation of three-dimensional patterns using modeling acrylic powder or a special gel composition. With the help of these materials, the volumetric ornament you choose is literally molded as if from plasticine and gives the manicure a unique 3D and even 4D effect. Many girls choose flowers, fruits and even insects (butterflies, bugs, etc.) as patterns. This manicure is suitable for almost everyone, regardless of the shape and length of the nails, and can also be used on both your own and extended nails. Volumetric sculpting on nails is especially popular among brides, as well as among young girls as a summer manicure.
How to position the sculpt correctly?
The ideal placement of the composition on the nail is a guarantee of successful work. Acrylic sculpting works best on the highest point of the nail. Places on the tip and cuticle area should be avoided, as it is impossible to secure the volumetric composition well there.
After the composition is fixed on the nail, it must be covered with a thin acrylic layer. This will protect the drawing from mechanical damage. The cuticle should be treated with oil. The final stage of decorative nail art is treating the nail with a nail file in order to give it an ideal shape.
There is another known, fairly simple method of applying acrylic sculpting to nails. The technology for this type of manicure is different in that all three-dimensional figures are initially made on foil or glossy paper.
The finished figure is transferred to the nail with a brush and secured with glue. Remember that excesses can only do harm and make your manicure look tacky. Professionals advise decorating no more than two nails on one hand.
How to choose the right materials for the job
It is not enough just to study the technology of applying sculpting; it is important to know which materials are most suitable for the job. The base is colored acrylic powder and acrylic liquid. By mixing these two ingredients you can obtain a plastic material of the desired consistency.
When choosing acrylic powder, pay special attention to its high quality. Only such a component will make it possible to create a plastic and easy-to-work material that, after hardening, will not crumble and can be easily sawed off.
Monomer or acrylic liquid is needed as a binding component to create the modeling mass. Manufacturers offer several types of acrylic liquid:
- based on ethyl methacrylate. It is absolutely odorless and allows you to create a self-hardening mass. Ideal for creating particularly subtle and elegant compositions;
- based on methyl methacrylic. A substance with a not very pleasant odor. It hardens quite slowly, so it is most suitable for nail extensions. Despite its pungent odor and detrimental effect on human health, the craftsmen did not completely abandon its use. The reason for this is the very low cost.
How to choose comfortable brushes for sculpting?
A sculpting brush is the main tool for decorative nail art. The variety of shapes and sizes can be a little confusing. But the master’s arsenal must include a pointed round brush and a “cat’s tongue” brush.
As you get better at it, you can purchase brushes of different sizes. So, to draw the fine details of flower petals, you may need a hair brush.
Acrylic or gel modeling is durable. To remove this beauty from your nails, just file it down. But this procedure should be carried out very carefully so as not to damage the nail plate.

Materials necessary for volumetric modeling, their types, differences, advantages and disadvantages
Today, professionals use only two existing types of volumetric sculpting in manicure:
- modeling with modeling acrylic powder;
- modeling using a special gel composition.
Modeling with acrylic powder
Acrylic modeling is very popular. Powder can be transparent or translucent, in various colors and shades; some manufacturers add glitter to it. Such a wide palette allows you to create beautiful three-dimensional patterns on your nails.
Acrylic extension and sculpting is done by combining two materials: acrylic powder and liquid (monomer - a transparent liquid necessary for hardening of acrylic powder). The connection of these materials is carried out directly at the moment of building up or creating a three-dimensional pattern.
Acrylic modeling comes in 2 types:
Aquarium sculpting - when creating such a design, a finished three-dimensional acrylic element is placed on the nail, then the entire nail along with the design is filled with transparent gel. As a result, the pattern ends up inside the artificial nail. The advantage of aquarium sculpting is that the volumetric elements do not cling to clothing, which significantly increases the wear time of such a manicure. However, the thickness of the nail is very large, which for some may be a disadvantage.
Volumetric modeling - with this type of modeling, acrylic elements are not filled with gel, and therefore the clearest volume of the pattern is visible. A significant disadvantage is the inconvenience of manicure in everyday life, since protruding patterns very often cling to clothes and other household items. Nevertheless, this type of modeling is very popular.
Advantages of sculpting with acrylic powder
- Modern acrylic contains the substance ethyl methacrylate. This substance does not harm the nail plate, but on the contrary, gives the nails a healthy appearance, making them stronger and more elastic.
- Acrylic is practically unaffected by temperatures. Acrylic also does not disrupt the shape and natural appearance of the nail. The nail plate does not bend under acrylic.
- Acrylic is easy to remove from the nail. You just need to dip your nail in a special liquid and it will easily dissolve. In this case, your own nail will not be damaged in any way.
- Using acrylic you can create beautiful manicure designs.
Disadvantages of acrylic sculpting
- Acrylic should absolutely not be used by people with various types of fungal diseases, since it creates a greenhouse effect on the nails and the disease will develop even faster from this;
- It is not recommended to use acrylic for people with gastrointestinal diseases, as well as those suffering from diabetes and problems with the hormonal system;
- People using medications and girls during menstruation should not use acrylic either.
Modeling using gel
Gel sculpting is a newer phenomenon than acrylic sculpting. Previously, gels were liquid, and with their help it was impossible to create three-dimensional patterns, because they spread. Now they have begun to produce thick gels that are specially designed for creating voluminous decorative designs.
Working with gel is much more difficult than working with acrylic. Each new layer of colored gel requires separate drying under a UV lamp, which makes the process longer and more expensive. This is the main feature and distinctive feature of sculpting using gel compositions.
There are 2 types of gel:
- 3D gel – has a dense and plastic consistency. With its help it is easy to create three-dimensional drawings. Often used in baguette modeling, as a frame for a pattern or picture.
- 4D gel - this gel has a very dense consistency, which is similar to hard sculptural plasticine or clay. Before starting work, such “plasticine” for nails is divided into small parts in the form of balls, and then the required pattern is cut out of it with a special metal tool. This gel sticks very strongly to your hands and tools, so when working with it you need to use a cleanser - a means to remove the sticky layer.
Advantages of gel sculpting
- The gel does not contain harmful substances, therefore it is not contraindicated for use even by women during pregnancy;
- The material is very elastic, which allows you to “sculpt” all kinds of decorative elements from it without much difficulty;
- The gel has no unpleasant odor;
- Does not harm nails at all and does not worsen their condition.
Disadvantages of gel sculpting
- The gel is very difficult to remove. Doing this on your own at home is incredibly difficult. There are no special products or liquids to remove the gel;
- The gel needs to be filed off. When cutting it down, a large amount of dust is formed, which can cause the development of allergies. It is necessary to remove the gel using special medical masks and in a well-ventilated area;
- Decorative products made from gel do not have great strength, therefore they are very sensitive to impacts, as a result of which decorative patterns can be destroyed.
Using nail gel is quite difficult, so for the first time it is better to entrust the procedure to a professional, and after gaining a little visual experience, you can try to make simple compositions yourself, at home.
Volumetric nail design with 3D or 4D gel (plasticine)
Performing a fashionable 3D gel manicure is very convenient thanks to the extraordinary plasticity of this high-density paste, which does not spread over the surface of the coating during operation. Each stroke easily maintains its own volume and you can easily draw small details of each element with the tool until you achieve the desired result. Thanks to the unique structure of colored 3D gels, you can create three-dimensional designs of any degree of complexity. If in the process of acrylic sculpting you need to perform each element accurately and quickly, then the gel paste will not dry until you polymerize the volumetric coating on the nails in a UV lamp. Nail designs made with 3D gel are resistant to external influences, do not fade, do not require additional care and retain their original appearance for several weeks. Also, the advantages of 3D gel sculpting include a large selection of shades of the color palette for creating any volumetric compositions on nails. After polymerization and removal of the sticky layer with a cleaner, all design elements become rich and glossy. By the way, in addition to gel paste, to create a fashionable manicure, today you can buy 4D gel (the so-called plasticine), which is characterized by increased density. Using 4D gel, you can work out the smallest details of a complex volumetric composition for nail design. ♦ POPULAR BRANDS PRODUCING 3D GEL • IRISK Professional

Step-by-step technique for performing a manicure using the power of volumetric acrylic sculpting
In order to create a three-dimensional pattern on your nails using acrylic sculpting, you will need the following tools:
- Acrylic powder in the desired colors;
- Liquid (monomer);
- Thin brush and flat brushes for pattern modeling;
- Napkins;
- Decorative elements (rhinestones, sparkles);
- Glue
Acrylic modeling is used on extended nails or on gel polish coating
- First you need to prepare the nail, process it properly, and give it the desired shape.
- Next, extend the nail or cover it with gel polish;
- Soak a thin brush in liquid, then dip it in acrylic powder, roll the brush until a small lump forms at the tip;
- Then place the resulting lump on the nail plate in place of the planned design, and use a brush to straighten the lump to create the required three-dimensional pattern. If the lump dries out, moisten the brush in the liquid and continue working.
- Repeat the procedure to create other pattern elements;
- If necessary, add additional decorative elements (rhinestones, sparkles, etc.);
- If desired, you can carefully coat the result with a topcoat to give it a glossy shine. However, this is not necessary if you do not use aquarium equipment.
Acrylic nail sculpting 2022 photo ideas options new items
A real manicurist can perform jewelry sculpting, turning simple nails into a work of art. The nuance of sculpting is that it is very difficult to do on your own, without skills. For acrylic modeling, you need to buy several colors of acrylic powder, monomer, a special brush and a product for cleaning it after work. All tools and materials must be of high quality; the strength of the finished design depends on this. The elements of the molded design must be correctly distributed over the surface of the nail so that the design does not look tasteless and bulky. You should not place the molding close to the edge of the nail or the cuticle - it will not adhere well. Select individual fingers for the design; the rest can be decorated with painting that harmonizes with the modeling elements, covered with a plain decorative varnish, or made into a jacket.
Performing acrylic sculpting:
- finished nails (formed into lower forms or tips) must be sanded with a buff or a special file;
- an acrylic ball is applied to the place where the modeling will be located, from which a design or design element is then derived. All movements must be precise, the finished design depends on this - the clearer the contours, the more expressive the sculpting will be;
- the finished design must be “supplemented” with small drawings, some accents from nail materials, so that the design has a finished look;
- The finished design can be coated with a transparent coating or left in its original form; the coating will protect the design from mechanical damage.
Step-by-step technique for performing volumetric manicure with the power of gel
To create volumetric sculpting using modeling gel, you will need the following tools:
- Brushes;
- Pusher;
- Dots;
- Gel (3D/4D);
- Means for removing the sticky layer (cleaner);
- UV or LED lamp
Gel sculpting is usually used on extended nails, but it can also be used on nails coated with gel polish/shellac or acrylic.
Important! It is not recommended to use this technique on regular nail polish. Since coating with ordinary varnish is very short-lived, performing volumetric modeling on it is not advisable.
At the end of the extension or after applying gel/varnish, the sticky layer must be removed from the surface of the coating.
- Perform nail extensions or cover them with gel polish. Dry under a UV lamp and remove the sticky layer from the surface;
- Using a pusher, take a little gel and use your fingers to form a base for the design;
- Place the gel on the surface of the base and use a dot or brush to form the desired pattern; you can smooth out sharp corners with a brush dipped in a cleanser;
- Dry the result under a UV lamp;
- Repeat the same procedure to create the remaining elements of the three-dimensional pattern;
- If desired, add other decorative elements (rhinestones, beads);
- At the end of the work, apply a top coat to the design without touching the rhinestones or beads. Dry in a UV lamp.

Acrylic design
The acrylic system used to create a three-dimensional design consists of two ingredients - powder and monomer, which are mixed in a certain proportion, varying depending on the specifics of the decor. When combined, they form a thick, plastic mass, from which a certain ornament is subsequently formed.
To add color to this design, you can immediately mix colored powder with the monomer, or cover the pattern with the selected shade after completing the main work. Finally, the decor is coated with acrylic fixative.
If the modeling is too complex, a special supporting frame is used for it. However, this type of design, as a rule, does not have a long-term wear life, so it is performed only for special occasions.
Sculpting your nails with acrylic should only be done on artificial acrylic nails. This is explained by the fact that such a design is very heavy and overloads the overgrown part of the nail, even if the created figure is not large in shape. This will cause the natural plate to crack or break.
In addition, for good adhesion of the ornament, the plate must be as smooth and ugly as possible, otherwise it will simply fall off, and this is almost impossible to achieve on natural nails. However, if you really wish, you can use a special glue that reliably attaches the acrylic to the surface of the plate.
The process of creating an acrylic design consists of the following steps:
- get rid of the remnants of the previous manicure, treat your hands with disinfectant;
- remove cuticles in the usual way;
- determine the location of the future acrylic ornament. It is better if its base is at the highest point, not far from the nail bed. This will ensure a longer wear period. It is not recommended to place the pattern near the cuticle, the edge of the nail, or the edge of the nail. On the designated area, it is necessary to apply special glue to secure the figure to the plate;
- Dip the brush into the monomer and then into the powder. A small ball will form on it, from which it will be necessary to form an element of the design. The volume of the ball is regulated by the depth of immersion of the brush into the monomer;
- transfer the acrylic ball to the nail and quickly form the necessary element of the pattern;
- using the same scheme, create all the remaining details of the ornament;
- If white acrylic was used for the design, after it dries, the design can be painted with acrylic paints. However, you need to act as carefully as possible, as they can soften the resulting pattern;
- apply fixative. If desired, the modeling can be decorated with rhinestones, glitter or beads.
The process of creating an acrylic ornament is very difficult for beginners due to the fact that the mixture hardens quickly and it is necessary to work as quickly and accurately as possible, with pinpoint precision.
As you can see from the photo, nail sculpting looks very impressive and incredibly beautiful. This is the best design that is suitable for special, special occasions. It will definitely make women's hands charming, tender and amazingly beautiful.
