For which nails is lace painting suitable?
Lace manicure on short nails
For openwork design there are no strict rules for choosing a specific nail shape. However, oval, soft square and round shapes are preferred.
It looks less attractive on pointed nails. There are no restrictions in determining the length - the main thing is that it is convenient.
Lace patterns are often done on extended nails rather than on their own. Drawing on extended nails looks prettier and more beautiful, and the design is easier due to the length of the nail plate.
Color scheme for lace manicure
- The basis for painting on lace is delicate and light pastel shades of flesh and beige; transparent varnish is most often used.
- Openwork elements on a French manicure look real and successful.
- Often color combinations are based on classic contrast: a white or red base with black lace.
- For those who want something bigger and extravagant, other bold color combinations are allowed: with a pink, turquoise, burgundy base.
- The combination of a transparent base or jacket with white is suitable mainly for special occasions and weddings.
Options for color combinations in lace nail designs
Openwork nail art using fabric
There are many types of lace: tulle material, nylon, mesh, frill fabric. And the range of colors is very wide, so you can try to combine different shades in one design. Black lace looks interesting. And it doesn’t matter what background, because in any execution it will look romantic. To perform this technique we will need:
- Fabric with lace.
- Basic gel polish.
- Toothpick, spatula or small tweezers.
- Nail scissors.
- Top coating.
Pre-cut blanks for the nail plates from lace fabric. Apply the base coat to the surface of the nails and dry under the lamp. Then apply the pigmented varnish that you chose for your manicure. Also dry the coating under a lamp. Now we apply the top coat, and apply fabric blanks onto it using tweezers. Gently spread over the surface of the nails and dry in a lamp. After drying, use scissors to remove any excess shreds or threads. Cover again with a transparent top and dry in a lamp for two minutes until completely dry. Nails with an openwork pattern are ready.

Lunar openwork design
If you want to make an original openwork nail design, you can use a moon manicure. Only in this case it is necessary to highlight not the edge, but the base of the nail. To do this, just apply any varnish to the nail and decorate the base with openwork patterns of a suitable color.
You can also do the opposite - apply an openwork design to the nail itself, and paint over the hole with varnish or leave it unpainted.
The so-called negative space will look impressive - this is when certain areas of the nails are not covered with varnish. This design is now gaining popularity and is considered a fashion trend.
Even a beginner in the nail industry can perform an openwork moon design. Instead of hand-painted lace, you can use special stickers. The result will be excellent.
Lace manicure using a stencil
A nail stencil is a blank that facilitates the process of creating a pattern. Conventionally, stencils are divided into two types:
- Adhesive based . A striking example of such a blank is stripes for French jackets. Patterned overlays for nail plates are made using the same principle. Let's take a closer look at the technique of using a stencil with a pattern:
- Choose a stencil with the pattern you like. For this pattern we select two contrasting colored varnishes.
- Apply the base to the nail plate and dry under a lamp.
- Apply one layer of colored varnish to all nails and dry under a lamp. Next we will work with each finger separately so as not to spoil the manicure.
- Apply a second layer of the same varnish to the nail plate and dry it under a lamp. Then degrease its surface.
- Glue the selected stencil onto a grease-free nail, level it and apply a layer of a second colored varnish on top of it. Dry it in a lamp.
- Carefully separate the template from the nail plate, and cover the pattern itself with a layer of top gel polish. Keep under the lamp until completely dry.
- Stencils based on the stamp principle . The process of creating decor with their help is called stamping. The pattern is transferred to the nail as an imprint.
To transfer a design, you need a special stamp - a small device with a handle and a soft silicone pad.
You select a pattern on a metal plate and cover it with special stamping paint. Regular polish or gel polish is not suitable because they do not have the same consistency. Remove excess paint from the plate with a scraper. By pressing, you transfer the pattern to a silicone pad, and then imprint it on the nail. The procedure is simple and quick, and gives an unexpectedly pleasant result. For greater safety, it is better to secure the design on top with a top coat.
Stamping
This is probably one of the favorite ways to create a manicure and nail design with lace, as in the photo, for many women. Its undoubted advantage is its ease of implementation, as well as its speed. With some skill, the print turns out neat and the drawing looks professional.
The disadvantages of this method include the relatively low variety of patterns, limited by the availability of certain stencils for sale, as well as the low complexity of the design. However, such prints can be supplemented with gel pens, toothpick designs and rhinestones. All this will help make lace manicure and nail design, as in the photo, more complex and sophisticated.

Lace with gel polish manually - step-by-step instructions
A very stylish and elegant nail design idea. This version of nail art is perfect for both manicure with gel polishes on natural nails and for gel nail design. This idea is based on the matte effect, which is very popular now, and lace made with gel polishes. Let's draw this design step by step and you will see how you can make such beauty at home.
Apply a base coat to the prepared nails and dry for two minutes in an ultraviolet lamp or 30 seconds in an LED lamp.
To create this design you will need these two complex shades: one of them is warm gray, and the second is yellow-brown. Apply a layer of gray varnish and dry for two minutes in a UV lamp, then apply a second layer and also dry.
- Apply top coat on top without a sticky layer. If you have a topcoat with a sticky layer, then apply it, and then remove the sticky layer with a degreaser.
- To create a good matte layer, you will need a file with an abrasiveness of 150-180 grit, which you need to sand the surface of your painted nails. If you don’t have a nail file, you can apply a matte top coat.
- Now you need to degrease the surface of the nails to remove excess dust.
- Take brown gel polish, add white gel paint to it to make it denser, mix and pick up a little pigment with a thin brush. Visually we divide the nail into three parts and at the border of one and the second third we draw an even line of the required thickness.
Now with the same thin brush we paint a texture reminiscent of foam. The mugs should be different sizes. Dry for two minutes in a lamp.
We take a dark brown gel polish, which itself is transparent, apply a small amount to a palette or silicone mat, put a little of this varnish on your finger and rub it on the surface of the foam. A brush is not suitable for these purposes, because the desired effect is not achieved. It is best to do this with a rubber glove.
Now, next to the first line, draw another line with the same dark varnish, fix it in the lamp for 10 seconds. Duplicate the light line and next to the dark line draw another light one, but thinner.
Take a thin lace brush and draw arcs. In the middle of each arc we draw a small arc. Then from the middle of each arc to the middle of the adjacent one we also draw an arc. The result is a symmetrical lace. Record 10 seconds in the lamp.
At the top of each arc we place neat dots. And after that, completely dry the nails in the lamp for 2 minutes. After drying, degrease the nails to remove excess stickiness.
Using a thin brush, apply a strip of transparent top on top of the dark strip and attach rhinestones to it. Dry it in a lamp.
Cross design diagram. If desired, it can be replaced with a longitudinal diagram.
This is the final result of this luxurious openwork manicure.
