Which nails to apply French on?
To create a fashionable French manicure, both short nails and medium-length nails - square, oval or almond-shaped - are suitable.

On long ones with a pointed edge, it will most likely look less harmonious, but in this case you can experiment.

For short nails
If you have short nails, then you should consider the combination of colors and proportions of the nail plate. This manicure is designed to visually lengthen your fingers. To prevent the opposite effect, make the free edge narrow.

How did French originate?
Jeff Pink is known in the nail industry as Elton John in the music world. Jeff founded the world-famous ORLY corporation, and in 1976 he gave women all over the world a design that would suit any outfit or look—a French manicure.
The history of the emergence of French is associated with Hollywood films. The film industry required a nail design that would match all the actresses' outfits. The task of developing such a design was assigned to Jeff Pink, who coped with it with a bang, coming up with “natural nails” - a manicure in nude tones with a white stripe on the free edge of the nail. After some time, the design was renamed “French manicure”, “French”. This happened after the universal design was used for models at a fashion show in Paris. Fashionistas who follow the latest innovations in the beauty industry quickly adopted it, and French nails became all the rage.
By the way, veneers have a similar history of creation - thin ceramic overlays on teeth, thanks to which dentists can hide any imperfections in the smile. They were also originally invented for Hollywood actresses, and after a while they “came out to the masses.”
Soon after the appearance of French manicure in America, another interpretation of the French manicure appeared, called “Beverly Hills”. Its author was the same Jeff Pink. Being an American by birth, he realized that he had made a mistake when choosing the name for his design and beauties in America were reluctant to wear a “French” manicure.
There is one fundamental difference between the designs - in the French manicure, a sharp transition of colors from white to soft pink is created between the free edge and the main part of the nail plate. In the Beverly Hills design, the white tip of the nail is covered with a layer of pink polish on top, so there is no sharp transition. This variation of the French coat has become popular among American beauties, but the name “Beverly Hills” did not catch on and is now practically not used.
Main types of French manicure
In addition to the classic French jacket and its first variation - Beverly Hills, over several decades of the design's existence, numerous variations have appeared. For the first time, Jeff Pink, already known to us, suggested combining non-classical colors in manicure. His corporation ORLY began to produce, in addition to the standard white and pink “duos” of varnishes for French design, creative sets called French FX. 3 color combinations were developed: silver and navy, black and glitter, white (for the base coat) and neon pink (for the tip).

The unusual French coat was received with interest by fashionistas, which became a “green light” for nail artists and experimental designers. Soon new ideas and varieties of French manicure began to appear. Shades, drawings on the free edge instead of a white line, rhinestones and other decor were added. The classic French jacket has become a successful “base” for creating hundreds of unique designs. Today a nail master can offer:
- classic pink and white jacket: a combination of a pastel base and a white free edge;
- wedding jacket : classic color combinations are used for it, but decor is added to the pink and white jacket: monograms in delicate colors, dots, lace, rhinestones, sparkles;
- colored French: the tip and main part of the nail is covered with colored varnish, colors are selected based on the principle of contrast, for example, black and red or blue and pale blue;
- stylized French manicure: as a rule, this is a French manicure with a pattern on the free edge instead of a smile line, but it can be supplemented with various decor: sparkles, rhinestones, stickers, foil;
- Hollywood: this beautiful French jacket remained in the TOP of popular designs for a long time, its “trick” is not a soft smile line, but a V-shaped one, drawn at an angle, and it is not necessary to use classic shades, it can be a colored jacket;
- millennium: the tip of the nail is covered not with white, but with shiny varnish (silver, gold, bronze);
- twist-french: manicure is performed using several shades for the free edge, these can be contrasting or similar colors, with their help a double smile line is drawn;
- fan-french: the manicure surprises with its creativity; it is most suitable for the summer or warm months of spring, when there is no need to wear gloves; design feature - the use of volumetric decor to decorate the free edge of the nail (bouillons, rhinestones, kamifibuki are often used);
- reverse French manicure: this is a hit of last season, its feature is repeating the contours of the lunula and painting the tip of the nail with the main color;
- lunar French: the manicure looks innovative, the free edge is not highlighted in color, instead the lunula area is outlined with a contrasting shade or it is left completely transparent;
- oblique French: manicure can be done in any shades, the main condition is to paint the free edge at an angle, and not a smooth line.
A beautiful French jacket is always a good solution. It is he who becomes a “lifesaver” for girls who are racking their brains over design while sitting in the nail artist’s chair. A French manicure does not get boring on the third day of wear, it looks stylish and neat and speaks of the good taste of its owner.
Like any other design, French manicure has changed in 2022, adapting to modern fashion trends. We will talk about them further.
Elegant classic, original lunar
A nude base with a white tip will give your fingers a natural look. Lunar - a fresh breath of the classics: contrasting combinations with a hole in the form of an oval, triangle or square will be an interesting alternative.

New for the season – reflections of gold and silver
Today we can highlight another fashionable French manicure design, which came as a surprise to many. Its main feature is the combination of gold and silver in one design.
This manicure can complement any celebration or become a unique element in an overall feminine look.
Popular colors
Pastel shades, black, red and gradients will go well with a beige base. Caramel-mint colors, neon, matte and ombre are trendy – with a smooth transition from the main tone to the free edge without a clear “smile” line.

French fashionable in 2022
Spring 2022 is in its prime, girls are rushing to update their wardrobe and get a manicure to complement it. Designers and colorists have already announced the most fashionable shades of the new season, they are:
- sunny yellow;
- the color of fresh greenery;
- tangerine;
- sand;
- the color of wet asphalt.

These shades are definitely worth trying on your nails. Spring calls for bold experiments, so don't be afraid to combine sunny yellow and rich green to create a spring jacket. If in the distant 70s such a decision would have been perceived as bad manners, then modern girls can safely create an unusual jacket on their nails in bright color combinations. Juicy color “duets” should also be used in a summer jacket.
Delicate French manicure remains an eternal classic. But, as you can see from the photo, 2022 brings some features to it:
- the decor should not be too heavy, a neatly glued pebble or a couple of shiny lines is enough;
- It is not necessary to emphasize the free edge of the nail with decor with white gel polish;
- if you want a fashionable jacket, use a matte top;
- if the nail is encrusted with rhinestones, they can be placed in different ways: horizontally, imitating jewelry, along the free edge of the nail, vertically along the entire length of the nail plate.
The classic design for oval nails looks especially elegant. The main thing is to carefully and thinly draw a line along the free edge of the nail. But even on short nails, a French manicure will look sophisticated and beautiful.
To get a stylish design, you can do moon nail art with a matte finish on oval nails. Leave the hole “bare” or fill it with glitter. In combination with a matte surface, shiny islands look especially interesting. The most popular shades: light gray, powdery, nude, lilac.
Below in the photo is a new manicure: the smile line flows into a linear pattern. This interesting technique will appeal to lovers of geometry and minimalism. The drawing and the smile line must be made in the same color. The most commonly used colors are white or black.
Tip: when performing this French manicure on short nails, use more vertical lines. They will make your nails visually longer.
French manicure with gel polish with drawings does not lose its relevance. These can be delicate monograms, thin lines with Gossamer gel , funny cartoon pictures. Below is a photo of the work of the masters of 2022.
The once popular millennium French style is also returning to the fashion arena. To create it you need glitter or shiny gel paint. The shade can be any. Using glitter you can make an unusual jacket. The main rule is not to overdo it with decor. It is not advisable to add any decorative elements, and if you decide to do this, do it carefully. Otherwise, you risk turning your fashionable jacket into a “guest from the past.”
Reverse French manicure is becoming increasingly popular. The most fashionable jacket is a combination of a soft pink or sand background with a golden or silver stripe. It looks equally advantageous on both oval and square nails. This design can be called all-season - it can be used both as a winter and as a summer jacket.
Below are interesting new products for 2022 and the most stylish ideas for your inspiration:
Drawings and design
Colored ornaments, lace patterns, geometric patterns, stripes, polka dots, frames, mother-of-pearl and metallic rubbing, stamping - everything will remain in fashion in the coming season. It is better to highlight one or two nails, symmetrically on both hands or on different fingers.

Millennium French manicure
If you wish, you can make your nails festive. In this case, the modern French millennium will come in handy. Any fashionista will be delighted by its bright shine and shimmering colored particles. This attractive design is suitable for long and medium-length nails.
Fingers decorated with glitter sparkles, sparkling nail tips covered with rhinestones, and shiny foil will attract attention.
These decorative elements will be an excellent addition to creating a glamorous design of nails in the “millennium French 2019-2020” style.
Unusual accessories
Decorations will add dimension to the design. For the “smile” line, use the following materials:
- Yuki flakes – foil pigment;
- rhinestones;
- confetti, sequins (kamifubiki);
- convex figures.

French with a double smile line
When looking at new designs, you can’t ignore French manicure options with a “smile” pattern.
A distinctive feature of this design is the presence of an additional French stripe that highlights the edge of the nail. Moreover, both strips have different thicknesses. One of them is wide, and the other is less noticeable.
As an experiment, nail professionals create stripes in different colors, and sometimes combine two different shades in one line. Thus, the result is an excellent nail design in a modern style.
Wedding
French - ideal for the bride. It complements her gentle image. And if you apply an ornament or rhinestones, you will also get an evening version.

Colored hand-drawn French
French can be different, not just white. The choice of color (free edge or background) depends on preference, time of year and your style. For example, if the dress code allows, then delicate pastel shades will wonderfully decorate your nails in the spring and summer. Bright colors and sparkles can be chosen for the holiday to match accessories or clothing. A colored jacket made using the gradient technique will well complement the image of a business woman, especially in nude tones.

Matte French coating
A matte French manicure with “smiles” combines chic and beauty in one.
With this coating, nail artists are able to use the brightest colors to cover their nails. With it they don’t look so rich, but the effect of the most beautiful French manicure remains more than worthy.
The popular cobalt blue, shade of peaches and olives, khaki tones, combined with matte look perfectly in the French style on any length of nails. You can further decorate them using decorative shiny elements.
Ideas for different nail shapes
Oval
The oval shape is suitable for those with an oval cuticle curve, as well as those with brittle and soft plates. These nails visually elongate your fingers and make them thinner. Wide nail plates are also narrowed.
Can be worn on any length and width.
Square
This shape is suitable for those who have a natural square cuticle curve, as well as strong and healthy nail plates, since the corners on soft nails tend to chip off. Not recommended for girls and women with plump, short boys. Can be worn on any length and width of nails.
The soft square shape is suitable for all types of fingers and nails. If you find it difficult to decide on the desired shape, choose this one. You really can't go wrong.
Pointe shoe (ballerina)
This shape requires impressive length and strong, healthy nails.
Pipe
This shape makes the fingers visually thinner and more graceful, narrows the nail plate, and perfectly conceals the plumpness of the hands. It wears well due to the use of artificial materials to model this shape. The length is not required, since it is impossible to make a pipe on natural nails.
Almond
Almond-shaped nails are great for girls with short and loose fingers, as they tend to make them longer and thinner. This shape requires a fairly long free edge, and the pointed tips often become dull during wear.
Stylet
The stiletto is one of the most extreme nail shapes in the world of nail art. It requires a very long free edge, extreme care in wearing and a strong guest plate. It looks very awkward on insufficiently long and too wide nails. Not bad to wear if you get used to it.
While each of these shapes is unique, they all work well with a smile design.
In 2022, the following colors will be trendy: white, blue shades, different variations of gray, black, shades of red, dark brown, olive, emerald, sunny yellow, dusty rose, beige palette.
If previously it was fashionable to wear a single-color gel polish, now the fashionistas have returned to the style of wearing several tones at the same time.
Pink jacket and rhinestones
Rhinestones and stones will help add a little sophistication and chic to a delicate pink jacket. These decorative elements can be placed in different places on the nail plate. For example, place rhinestones along the entire “smile” line or at the base of the nail, creating a hole shape. When decorating a pink jacket with rhinestones, you need to remember moderation, otherwise your flawless manicure will look defiant and lose its luxury and beauty. A pink jacket with a rhinestone addition goes well with other decorative elements, such as bouillons or beads.
About fashionable manicure in pastel colors
Neil in neutral shades is considered the most unpretentious. It looks equally harmonious with clothes of different styles and shades. Manicure in pastel shades is chosen for its versatility. It is practically unnoticeable, but it is still there.
Pastel colors suitable for any nail shape
Manicurists advise choosing two pastel shades, one of which to paint two nails, while the other covers all the rest. Also popular are stucco moldings or drawings with sugar varnish of adjacent shades on top of a monochrome manicure in pastel shades.
