Liquid foil for nails is a gel polish that contains a large number of sparkles of different sizes, which allows it, after hardening, to create an even, beautiful metallic shine on the nails.
After covering with holographic nail foil, your hands look neat and well-groomed for a long period of time without unnecessary hassle. But the very procedure of applying nail foil to regular polish can be accompanied by difficulties. Sometimes the base does not fit well on the nail; when applying foil, bald spots, bubbles, streaks form, the varnish can streak, and the nail itself bends.
General rules for preparing for applying transfer foil for nails
Proper preparation will ensure optimal adhesion of the nail plate to special products, the manicure will be durable and last longer.
- Initially, it is necessary to treat the surface with a buff or a hardware grinder. The surface will be smooth and uniform.
- Then the nail is degreased and cleaned of dust and dirt with a special cleaner. If you use a degreaser based on acetone and alcohol, you can simultaneously clean and degrease the nail. It is advisable to apply more product to the area of the side rollers and cuticle lines. These are the places where the likelihood of detachments and unevenness is increased.
- Afterwards, you need to treat the nail with a primer, applying it to the tip of the nail and the vulnerable area. If you apply the primer to the entire surface, the base will begin to flow towards the center of the nail after application. It should be taken into account that some types of primer require drying in a lamp.
- Start applying the base.
The base does not fit well on the nail
Various foil bases, if not prepared correctly, may lie unevenly on the nail, and in some places they simply do not stick to the nail. The solution here is simple - good degreasing of the nail plate. If you use a bad dehydrator, alcohol or nail polish remover, the degreasing will not be high-quality and there will be difficulties with applying the base. A second coat of base will not improve the situation. It is necessary to use a special dehydrator or degreaser, then the base will lie smoothly and without bald spots.
The cause may also be poor nail cleansing from dust and dirt.
The base will definitely fit well on the nail if you thoroughly clean and degrease the nail plate with high-quality products.
Transfer foil on nails stripes when applied
Careful preparation and correct application of the base will not eliminate difficulties at the next stage. Transfer foil on nails can streak. There are several reasons for this, one of which is expired nail foil from AliExpress.
At the end of the expiration date, the product must be thrown away or, as a last resort, left for training on tips. It is better not to use it on nails, since due to changes in the structure of the foil, it will not lie flat on the nail plate, and bald spots will be visible.
Light, creamy colors or translucent shades always go with gaps and stripes. This happens due to the characteristics of the pigment. Therefore, it is necessary to apply several layers without fail. It's ok to apply 4 coats.
Types of material
There are several types of nail foil, namely:
- transferable permanent and tear-off foil for nails;
- leafy;
- embossed;
- compressed (in jars);
- in stripes;
- minx.
Transferable
This material is often provided in sheets, but can also be sold in small rolls. To create a manicure using foil, you need a special glue or gel with a sticky layer.
Leafy
This material is designed for cutting out various shiny patterns, butterflies, flowers, etc. Sheets are also used to create a casting effect. The coating is attached to the nails using a special glue, a gel with a sticky layer, or a clear varnish.
Embossed
Nail design using this type of foil is always interesting, original and intricate. Embossed foil has a structured surface and is ideal for creating original patterns on nails. This material is not used for the casting effect.
Compressed
This type of foil is very popular among fashionistas who choose unusual nail designs. The material is usually sold in jars in a compressed, as if wrinkled form - hence the name. In appearance, the product resembles gold leaf. Its main application is “aquarium” design. How to transfer foil to nails? It’s very simple: it is glued to the sticky layer left over from the gel. In addition, the foil can be attached using transparent varnish or glue, but these means are used quite rarely.
Striped
Stripes with a sticky base are a truly simple and inexpensive accessory for adding uniqueness to your manicure. A wide range of colors allows you to create the most daring experiments with nail decor and fantasize ad infinitum.
Minx
This type of manicure is relatively young, as it appeared quite recently, but has already managed to conquer modern beauties with its unusualness and unparalleled effect. It is performed using special stickers attached to the nail under the influence of temperature. Nail design with foil step by step is as follows:

Even a beginner can cope with this nail decoration, since working with stickers does not present any difficulties.
The secret to applying foil
Under the colored varnish, apply a white or black base coat. It is selected depending on the tone of the main varnish. The color may change slightly, but there will be no streaks or bald spots. Sometimes a different color looks even better than the original idea.
The nail bends
One of the advantages of using gel polish is the elimination of brittle nails. True, treatment does not occur under a layer of varnish; the nail is simply strengthened with a “protective film.” But still, this is a good way to grow your nails and give them a presentable look.
Ways to strengthen nails with gel polish:
- a) using acrylic powder: a classic and effective method that increases the strength of the coating, evens out the nail plate and does not affect the color of the coating;
- b) using biogel: this method not only increases the “life” of the manicure, but also helps strengthen the nail plate thanks to the natural ingredients contained in the composition;
- c) applying several layers of base for gel polish.
There are many options for using gel nail polish that looks like foil to create different designs:
- Lunar manicure. Designed for lovers of everything unusual. The holes make overgrown nails less noticeable, which allows you to wear the coating much longer.
- French. A classic French jacket is transformed if you add shine using liquid foil. The combination of classics and trends helps make a manicure unusual and original.
- Mirror effect coating. The mirror effect can be achieved in classic gold or silver tones, or pay attention to the trend - lilac, blue, purple.
- Casting. Looks impressive on nails of any length, allowing you to make the design unique.
Any of the above designs of liquid foil on gel polish is done quite simply, and the manicure turns out stylish and laconic.
Current trends in manicure with foil
The most fashionable options for using decor are:
- A combination of several colors of varnish and complementing the design with a cobweb. A dark shade is applied to the nails of the index, middle and thumb fingers, and a nude shade is applied to the little and middle fingers. On the latter, thin dark diagonal lines are made, leaving the base light. Gold foil is printed on the web. It is also used to decorate the hole of the little finger.
- Using foil to make a design. For example, 3 pieces of laying material in the form of butterfly wings are glued onto a black background. The remaining details of the image are painted with white gel paint; some can be highlighted with rhinestones. Instead of a butterfly, flowers, stars, twigs, hearts, monograms, etc. are also depicted.
- A combination of light varnish and contrasting shades of foil. It is used to decorate 1-2 plates in whole or in part. You can complement the design with thin straight or curved lines in black.
- Geometry with foil. The plate is painted with contrasting colors of gel polish, creating different shapes, straight or curved lines. It can be divided in this way along or across, to the diagonal, to outline the hole, the free edge. Foil is then applied to the darker color.
